AOS MEMBERSHIP NEWS AOS Foundation Helps Patients In Financial Need The needs of our individual communities can almost overwhelm us. Each and every day, we are seeing patients that come to us with severe issues, yet can’t afford even the discounted fees we might offer. Our compassionate side must listen to our business side more often than we like. Understanding these challenges of serving a diverse public, the Board of Directors of the American Orthodontic Society wisely established a charitable Foundation as a way to give back to the dental commu-nity and the public it treats. This year, the Foundation is under the leadership of Dr. Anne Mary Orr of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. Since its establishment 15 years ago, the Foundation has expanded its scholarship program to three outstanding universities: University of Okla-homa, Tufts University, and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. We’ve awarded over $75,000 to outstanding dental students, with plans to grow this program based on donations that our members gener-ously provide. We’ve conducted 14 consecutive “Dr. William E. Wyatt, Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series” clinical symposiums, all provided free to over 2,000 attendees. Our final program is one that I want to emphasize. Called the Smile Builders, the Foundation will pay Juan J. Solano, DDS AOS President for lab fees and supplies, up to $500 per case, if a member dentist will donate their time to treat a case orthodontically. The approval process is easy and can be discussed with our Executive Direc-tor, Tom Chapman, at 800-448-1601. The financial need of the case is up to the discretion of the treat-ing dentist. We ask to see the diagnosis, treatment plan and radiographs, which can all be sent digitally. This is an outstanding program that can make an impact in your community. As you decide which cases to treat pro bono, consider an orthodontic case and create another beautiful smile in your commu-nity in partnership with the American Orthodontic Society Foundation. Juan J. Solano, DDS SEGUE INTO CHICAGO! Chicago is a great summertime family destination. So, plan on bringing your family with you to the Windy City August 15 – 18 for our Annual Meeting! With some advance planning, family tours and trans-portation can be offered to include the World’s Shedd Aquarium, Chicago’s Navy Pier, and the Children’s Museum in the Friday or Saturday schedule. And, although time does not permit us to coordinate a group outing, the Chicago Cubs will be “at home” during our meeting dates, so enjoy some peanuts and Cracker Jack with the family at Wrigley Field! (Check the Cubs website for game times.) We’ve assembled two great mornings of tours and fun for spouses and guests. First, glide around the fabulous Lakefront, Museum Campus, and parks Friday morning on a fun and safe Segway! Lunch afterwards is at The Gage Tavern and Restaurant, featuring an eclectic collection of contemporary American cuisine and offering incredible views of Millennium Park and Michigan Avenue. Hang out wid da gangstahs and flappahs Friday night at Tommy Gun’s Garage, an authentic Roaring 20’s Speakeasy and dinner theatre. Be ready for some friendly competition Saturday at the Chopping Block, located in the famous Merchandise Mart. Two teams will compete in this Iron Chef-style cook-off, and then enjoy the delicious dishes they have created. Saturday afternoon might be a good time to hit some stores along the “Magnificent Mile.” Dr. Edward Gonzalez will be our speaker for this year’s FREE Dr. William E. Wyatt, Sr. Distinguished Lecture Series, sponsored by your AOS charitable Foundation. Other speakers this year include: Dr. Frank Celenza on interdisci-plinary excellence, Dr. Thomas Mulligan on the principles of biomechanics, Dr. Ralph Nicassio, on Differential Class II case diag-nosis, Dr. Gerilyn Alfe on short-term orthodontics, Dr. Anil Idiculla on his play-book for Live-Life-Smiling, and Dr. Larry White will offer new solutions for the correction of Class II malocclusions. Dr. Juan Echeverri will provide a hands-on workshop Sunday on “The Art and Science of Skeletal Anchorage with TAD’s.” Michigan Avenue’s InterContinental Chicago Hotel provides an architecturally outstand-ing location for this year’s Annual Meeting. Located in the heart of the famed “Magnificent Mile” in downtown Chicago, this historic hotel is the only one on Michigan Avenue whose doors open directly onto this world-famous boulevard. We’ll see YOU in Chicago! www.orthodontics.com March/April 2013 45
