Groundhog Day was a couple of months ago, but when that large hairy rodent poked his head out of his hole on February 2nd, he was heralding the coming of the spring time we are now enjoying. Groundhog Day is a big event in the county I live and work in. The 1993 movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell was filmed in Woodstock, IL, ten minutes north of my office. Every February for the past fifteen years a week long celebration of the movie and its name sake event is held culminating in “Woodstock Willie” predicting how much longer winter will grip our area. While putting together this spring edition of the Journal I could not help thinking about the movie named for the second day in February. We all know the story line, a weather man is reluctantly sent to cover a story about a weather forecasting “rat” (as he calls it). This is his fourth year on the story and he makes no effort to hide his frustration. On waking the next day he discovers that it’s Groundhog Day again and again and he comes to realize that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people, doing the same thing everyday. One of Bill Murray’s lines from the movie states “What would you do if you were stuck in one place and everyday was exactly the same and nothing that you did mattered”? I bring this all up because many times I hear a similar rant from doctors involving some of their orthodontic cases. “I’m stuck. “The case won’t finish.” “Nothing I do matters.” “I keep getting the same results.” Much like Bill Murray’s character they can’t seem to get out of that cycle. With this issue of the Journal we present some information that will nudge you to wake up in a different day. Oral Myology can be the answer for those cases where you are stuck and you keep getting the same unhappy result since nothing you do seems to matter. In this issue and the next we will be giving you information to help fill in the missing pieces. Darwinian Dentistry, Oral Myology and Minor Tooth Movement can be that extra piece that enhances your understanding of how your patients got to where they are and what they need to help them complete their treat-ment. At times we are the groundhog, afraid of our shadow, living each day the same, getting the same results, not knowing why or how to fix it to end the cycle. That is the point the movie tries to make and the point I hope this issue of the Journal will make for you. Today start something new. Something that is good for you and your practice by find-ing that missing link for your patients, something that will make both your orthodontic and general patient care more fulfilling. That missing piece that can finish up those difficult cases. The closing song in Groundhog Day is “Almost Like Being In Love” from Brigadoon a musical which also dealt with a village trapped in time. It’s time to look at something new that could pull some of those difficult cases out of the rut and give you the answer as to how they got there. Read and enjoy these issues and cue the music.
