I remove the posterior bands and brackets on premolars, remove the sectionals, and take impression on the upper AND LOWER for the upper retainer. Always send an opposing impres-sion for the upper retainer unless you enjoy grinding acrylic. Figs. 12 – 15 show the final records, retain-ers and side by side photos. Total treatment time was 18 months. I employ an upper wrap around QCM retainer which substitutes a clear vinyl labial bow for the metal one. It is cosmetic and is more readily worn. The wrap around prevents any wires from banging on the oppos-ing teeth and also allows the teeth to settle in to a func-tioning occlusion. I also place a lower bonded 3x3 of .023 retainer wire to keep the anteriors straight. Retention is forever. I hope this article proves to be benefi-cial in your offices.
