Wyatt, Sr. The ancient port of Alexandria, Egypt, dates back to 1900 BC and has long served as a vital gateway for trade and culture. Protected by marine rocks and two breakwaters, its narrow entrance—only about 400 meters wide—is intersected by winding channels that make navi-gation perilous. Because of these hazards, pilot boats have, for centuries, been used to guide ships safely through treacherous waters into the harbor. Dr. William E. Wyatt, Sr., found-ing member and past president of the American Orthodontic Society, was much like one of those pilot boats—steady, knowledgeable, and dedicated to guiding others. He led countless members of the AOS, as well as the wider dental commu-nity, through uncertain and chal-lenging waters. Wyatt passed away recently at the age of 97, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of lead-ership, mentorship, and kindness. In recognition of his extraordi-nary commitment to the educa-tional mission of the AOS over the past 50 years—and for all he did to strengthen and elevate the organiza-tion—we dedicate this issue of the Journal to honoring Dr. Bill Wyatt. I first met Dr. Wyatt when he was 74. From that moment, it was clear how deeply he loved dentistry and orthodontics. Teaching and mentorship weren’t just part of his work—they were his calling. Even into his late 90s, he continued to inspire others with his knowledge, generosity, and friendship. Many people talk about retiring early, working and saving so they can relax at 55 and spend their days on the golf course. But Wyatt was different. When you truly love what you do, age becomes irrelevant. Dr. Bill radiated purpose; he had a mission that wouldn’t allow him to “hang up his hat.” He continued sharing his skills and wisdom because he believed he could still make a meaningful difference—in orthodontics, in dentistry, and in the lives of those around him. Dr. Wyatt reminded us that greatness doesn’t retire. He spent his life helping others navigate their own paths, providing direction, encouragement, and clarity when the waters seemed uncertain. He lived by the spirit of this simple but powerful truth: “The time for action is now. It’s never too late to do something.” Thank you, Bill—for being our friend, our mentor, and our pilot.
