The designer then sent back the waxup files, which were then printed in model resin. Once the models are done with post-processing, a putty-wash trans-fer stent was made to allow for intra-oral application using tempo-rary crown and bridge material. The author uses the term “trial smile” with his patients.(Figs. 4 & 5) This allows the patient to actually see a preview of the results, in their own mouth, before committing to treatment. Because this is a purely additive approach, it is a non-invasive and fully reversible procedure. To clarify the workflow further, here are pictures of the labwork from another case. (Figs. 6-8) Case Type 2: Injection Molded Composites In the same vein as using diag-nostic waxups for motivational try-ins, these designs can also serve as the basis for direct resins as well. This is a very versatile treatment modality allowing for many appli-cations such as: b Minimally-invasive composite veneers b Black triangle closure b Bonding of peg laterals b Post-orthodontic bonding b Long-term temporaries for rehabilitation Following are some photographs of this application. The patient, a 33-year-old male, had a deep bite, wear and tooth size discrepancy. Straightwire was used for 13 months to level and align the teeth and to open the bite. (Fig. 9) After bracket removal, the patient was re-scanned and the models were sent to a remote designer for digital waxup. The waxup models were then printed on a Sprintray Pro95 printer using Sprintray Die and Model Resin 2 (Sprintray, Los Angeles, CA). The injection mold stent was fabri-cated using Exaclear by GC (GC America Inc, Alsip, IL). A clear stent material is needed to allow for light curing. www.orthodontics.com Fall 2022 13
