Yet, at the hundred and first blow, it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.” Sometimes we can get frustrated with the results we may be getting with our patient’s orthodontic treat-ment. They may seem like large rocks blocking our path to better orthodontic outcomes, but you need to remember the stonecutter and keep hammering away. In this case, hammering away involves continuing your orthodontic educa-tion. Every course you take, every annual meeting you attend, every article you read from this Journal and every case you put together for Tier advancement is a learning experience that acts like a blow on that rock. Each time you continue to add to your orthodontic advancement through courses or becoming a Diplomate, you are making progress at cracking that rock. Sometimes you can get frus-trated because you may see how well treatment is going for others and worry that you will never reach their standard of excellence. But you need to not quit or cut back on the orthodontic treatment you are giving. What you are seeing with others is the end product of years of hard work and practice. Don’t get demoralized, remember the stone-cutter and keep hammering away. Our great organizations and instructors are available to help you with your success. Success does not come to those who try to break the rock and give up after one or two attempts. It comes to those who keep going until they finally get the breakthrough that they are after. So, if you ever feel like you are struggling, take the time to take a refresher course, talk to an instructor, ask questions and work toward your tier advancement. By putting together cases, you will put yourself in the position to get the breakthrough you are looking for. As Aristotle once said, “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” Remember the stonecutter and just keep pounding that rock.
