His brilliant escape plot involved fash-ioning a set of wings for himself and his son. After affixing his wings with wax and feathers, they set out to escape. Daedalus warned Icarus not to fly to close to the sun. But once he was up in the air, poor Icarus was entranced by his ability to fly. He soared upward toward the sun, the wax melted, he lost his wings and Icarus tumbled into the sea and died. Many times in our lives and careers, we have been told like Icarus not to fly to close to the sun. In the time of Icarus, only the chosen few (the Gods) could reach such heights and to try would result in failure. In dental school, I too was told like Icarus not to try to fly too high. While a junior, I began asking questions about doing orthodontics as an undergrad and learning more about orthodontics. I was told that was not possible since orthodontics was something that could only be done by the chosen few, “the best and the brightest”, who were picked to be part of a postgraduate program. Upon graduating from dental school, I decided what I liked the most about dentistry was the versatility of being a general dentist. And for that reason, I still wanted to add orthodon-tics to the treatment I offered my patients. So, I started working on building my wings so I could soar toward the sun. I began by collecting my “feathers”, which were courses and lectures on doing orthodontics as a general practitioner. Piece by piece, I added these to the wax that made up my wings. I began to read up on orthodontics and helped start this Journal. The great classes offered by the American Orthodontic Society and the hands-on course of the Academy of Gp Orthodontics helped place the final pieces together so that I was ready to strap on my wings and soar to new orthodontic heights. All of us have taken the time to move away from the people who have told us we couldn’t do something. By taking the time to become accom-plished in doing orthodontics, we have enriched both our lives and our patient’s lives. We have strapped on our wings of wax and feathers that we have built and soared to new heights. But there is a part of the myth of Icarus that is often left out. In addition to telling Icarus not to fly to high, Daedalus also instructed his son not to fly too low, too close to the sea, because the water would ruin the lift in his wings. It is far more dangerous to fly too low than too high because it feels safe to fly low. We can end up settling for lower expectations and smaller dreams and thus guaranteeing ourselves less than we are capable of. By flying too low, we short change ourselves but also those who depend on us or might benefit from our work. Many times, it happens that we live our lives chained to the ground and we never even know we have the key to unlock the chains. So, take the time to take the classes offered to you by our organizations. Go to the annual meet-ings, read this Journal and start work-ing on earning your Fellowship and Diplomate status. Each action, each course, each article is another feather toward building the wings that will allow you to soar and the key to unlock the chains. Once your wings are built, remem-ber to climb toward the sun. Too often we are lulled into not flying too high, so instead we fly too low, living an ordinary life and doing ordinary work. It may feel safer and more comfortable flying low, but the satisfaction of soar-ing to new heights beats the safe feel-ing of hugging close to the ground. I encourage you all to reach higher and create excellence. EDITORIAL STAFF Greg Cannizzo, DDS ....................... AGpO Editor Jordan Balvich, DMD ........................
