Many of his sayings and instructions were placed in the biblical book of Proverbs. One of his greatest proverbs reads, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” This verse described the need to have people in our lives that make us better: people who encourage and mentor us as well as challenge our perspectives. We all need to have people who teach us lead us and positively influence us. There is no better place to find the people I described above than at an annual meeting where our speakers and instructors encourage and chal-lenge us. And so many work to mentor us through lectures and the articles they publish in this Journal. So, during our most recent gathering this September, I found myself reflect-ing on Solomon’s writing and how it involves our great organization. you for running your office, your orthodontic practice, or with life. You will find the contact needed to sharpen your iron can come from our great organization, our outstanding annual meetings and the superb courses offered through-out the year. The number of people willing to learn and share their knowledge is an enormous part of our annual meetings, courses and this Journal. Make sure you don’t just look for people who can help you in your development, look for people you can also help. Don’t just look for a mentor; look to be a mentor. Make sure you are encouraged and that you encourage others. Be coached and coach others. Iron sharpens iron and we all need people in our lives who can assist us in our and their development. We should be grateful when people who polish away our rough edges, improve our minds, and help us aspire to be our best, challenge us. I’ll be looking to sharpen you through this Journal, and I look forward to all of you honing the rest of us with your continual future submissions. They have little to offer that will assist us in our journey through life. They may be negative, unable to learn new things or perhaps they have a lot of knowledge, but they prefer to keep it all to themselves.
