Both were part of a race. The hare was quick and fast. During the course of the race, he would sprint ahead then stop and then repeat this again and again. The tortoise on the other hand continued to run his race at a fixed steady pace moving relentlessly through the course until he finally won the race. It's a great message about how slow and steady wins the race, but there is one thing we need to remember about this tale. No matter how fast or how slow either of them went; no matter whether or not they stopped along the way or kept on going, they both finished. The hare may have been disap-pointed in not winning, but he still got to the finish line. Being the first to the finish line is great, but the race itself and making it to the finish line are what is more important. Becoming a Diplomate is a kind of race, resembling more of a marathon then a 5K, but getting there first is not as important as finishing. As you proceed with becoming a Diplomate, you may move through the process at a slow and steady pace or you may prefer to sprint and take small rests every now and then. Just keep moving toward your final goal. This past spring, four members finished their "race" and crossed the finish line by becoming Diplomates. Congratulations to Dr. Jeff Dahm, Dr. Anna Kalmanovich, Dr. Kylene Fernandez and Dr. Matthew Geddes --each of them ran their own race, but they all reached their goal. You may have been working for some time on moving forward to become a Diplomate and you may feel as though you are on the cusp of success. Or, you may have just started and your goal may seem distant. Just make sure that you get there in the end and finish the race. Doris Brown Heritage was a pioneer in women's distance running. She once said, "When you put yourself on the line in a race and expose yourself to the unknown, you learn things about yourself that are very exciting". By being part of the "race" to become a Diplomate, you learn a lot about yourself and about your orthodon-tics. When you reach your final goal, we will be there to cheer you and congratulate you. Not for sprinting or for being slow and steady, but for simply pressing forward, working hard and crossing the finish line. Congratulations to all Diplomates!
